Where the centre is and how to get there

The Toronto Downsview DriveTest Centre is at 37 Carl Hall Road, inside Downsview Park in North York. You enter the park from Sheppard Avenue West or John Drury Drive and follow the park roads to the old hangar buildings; the DriveTest entrance is at the back of the building, so give yourself a minute to find it the first time. Parking is free in the surface lot outside.

By transit, Sheppard West and Downsview Park stations on Line 1 are both a walk away, and Downsview Park is also a GO stop on the Barrie line. Whichever way you arrive, plan to be at the counter 30 minutes before your appointment. Late arrivals usually lose the slot and the fee.

What the test covers at Downsview

The G2 road test at Toronto Downsview is a city driving test of roughly 20 minutes. You will be scored on starting, stopping and turning; intersections of several types including left turns across traffic; at least one lane change with a visible shoulder check; parallel parking and a three-point turn; speed control through 40, 50 and 60 km/h zones; and general observation throughout. There is no highway portion on the G2.

The full G road test repeats the city elements and adds a highway section on Highway 401, reached via Allen Road or Keele Street: merging, holding a steady speed with a two-second gap, one or more lane changes, and exiting. What the roads around Downsview are like

Downsview routes have three distinct flavours, and a good test drive touches all three:

• Park roads. The first and last minutes of the test are on the low-speed roads inside Downsview Park. They look easy, which is exactly why people relax and roll a stop sign here.
• Wide arterials. Sheppard Avenue West, Keele Street, Wilson Avenue and Dufferin Street are multi-lane roads with 50 and 60 km/h limits, bus stops, and plenty of lane-change opportunities. Expect at least one lane change and several left turns across traffic.
• Residential grids. The streets south of Sheppard and east of Keele are where parking manoeuvres happen: parallel parking, a three-point turn, and the reverse into or out of a space on a quiet street.

Because the centre sits next to Highway 401 and Allen Road, the full G test here almost always includes a run on the 401, and merging from a short ramp into 401 collector traffic is the part G candidates should rehearse most.

Where people lose marks at Downsview

• Rolling the park stop signs. Low speed does not mean optional. Wheels must stop turning at every stop sign, including the ones inside the park.
• Sheppard Avenue lane changes. A mirror glance is not enough. Examiners want to see your head turn for the shoulder check every time, and a change without one is marked hard.
• Left turns on Keele and Wilson. Waiting through a safe gap is scored as hesitation; pulling out into a gap that is too small is scored as a right-of-way error. Practise judging gaps at these specific intersections.
• Speed drift on Dufferin. The road feels faster than its posted limit. Sit on the limit, not five over.
• The 401 merge on the G test. Merging at 60 km/h into 100 km/h traffic is the most common G fail at any Toronto centre. Build speed on the ramp and match the flow before you move over.

Test-day plan for Downsview

1. Documents: your physical licence card (G1 for a G2 test, G2 for a G test), booking confirmation, glasses if required, and the car's ownership and insurance. The full list is in our road test checklist.
2. Warm-up drive: 30 to 60 minutes on the roads described above, right before your slot.
3. Arrive 30 minutes early at 37 Carl Hall Road, Toronto (North York), M3K 2E2, inside Downsview Park.
4. During the test: narrate it in your head. Mirror, signal, shoulder, go. Full stops, steady speed, and commit to safe gaps.
5. If it does not go your way: get the examiner's report, book the first available retake, and take one lesson aimed at what was marked. What happens if you fail covers the wait, fees and rebooking.
