The hourly rate
Across the GTA, in-car lessons with a licensed instructor run $40 to $60 an hour. On MrDriver every instructor sets their own rate and shows it on their profile, so the range is a map rather than a mystery: lessons start from $40 an hour in Toronto, Mississauga and Brampton, and in Brampton every instructor on the platform currently charges $40. Outside the GTA, rates are similar or slightly lower, though there are fewer instructors to compare.
What moves the number inside that range is experience, the car, how far the instructor travels to collect you, and what is bundled: some quote a bare hour, others build the pickup and a debrief into a 90-minute lesson.
Packages, BDE courses and road test packages
- Multi-lesson packages. Most instructors discount a block of five or ten hours. The saving is usually a few dollars an hour, and the real value is that you commit to a plan rather than booking ad hoc.
- Beginner Driver Education (BDE). The MTO-approved 40-hour course (20 classroom, 10 in-car, 10 home study) is priced by each approved provider and typically runs several hundred dollars to over a thousand depending on what is included, such as a car for the road test. It cuts your G1 wait from 12 to 8 months and earns an insurance discount that usually outweighs the fee over a few years. Our BDE guide weighs it up.
- Road test packages. A warm-up drive, the instructor's insured dual-brake car for the test and a ride home, priced by the instructor and shown on their profile. It costs more than a single hour because it bundles two to three hours of time plus the car. See what a test car really costs.

- $159.75 for the Class G1 licensing package: the knowledge test, your first G2 road test and a five-year licence.
- $16 for each knowledge-test rewrite.
- $53.75 for each G2 road test retake.
- $91.25 for the G road test, every attempt.

What the whole journey adds up to
Using the $40 to $60 range and the lesson counts instructors typically recommend (see how many lessons you need):
- Complete beginner, G1 to G2: 15 to 25 hours of instruction is $600 to $1,500, or a BDE course plus a few prep lessons. Add $159.75 in fees.
- Test prep only: 2 to 5 lessons is $80 to $300, plus a road test package if you want the car.
- G2 to G: 2 to 4 lessons with highway time is $80 to $240, plus the $91.25 test fee.
Supervised practice with a parent or friend in between lessons is free and is where most of the hours should come from. Spend the paid hours at the start, on fundamentals, and at the end, on the test.
How to pay less without getting less
- Compare rates side by side rather than taking the first quote. On MrDriver the rate is on the profile.
- Book a package once you know the instructor is right for you, not before.
- Practise between lessons so paid hours go to correction, not repetition.
- Take the test in the car you learned in. A failed test costs a fee, a ten-day wait and more lessons.
- If you are a complete beginner, price BDE against lessons plus the insurance discount you would forgo.
