Failed Your G2 or G Test? What Happens Next

On the day: get the report

When the examiner tells you the result, ask for the driver examination report before you leave. It shows every category that was marked and any dangerous action noted. If you did not get it, DriveTest can provide it at the counter with your name and licence number. This sheet is the entire plan for your retake, so keep it.

Your current licence does not change. A G1 holder who fails the G2 test is still a G1 driver with the same restrictions; a G2 holder who fails the G test keeps driving on their G2.

The waiting period and rebooking

You must wait a minimum of 10 days after a failed attempt before taking the same road test again. In practice the constraint is availability: busy GTA centres often show the next open slot weeks out. Three ways to shorten that:

• Book before you leave the centre. Lock in the first available date, even if it is far off. You can always move it.
• Check for cancellations daily. Slots open up as other people reschedule, often early in the morning. Re-checking drivetest.ca every day usually finds something sooner.
• Consider a different centre. Availability varies a lot between nearby centres. If you are flexible, compare a few; just practise around whichever one you pick.

Remember the 48-hour rule: cancel or reschedule at least 48 hours before an appointment or the fee is lost.

Fees and how many attempts you get

• A G2 road test retake costs $53.75. Your first G2 attempt was included in the $159.75 G1 licensing package; every attempt after that is paid separately.
• A G road test costs $91.25 each time, including the first.
• There is no limit on the number of attempts.

The real deadline is the licence itself. You have five years from the date you got your G1 to complete the whole process. If your G1 expires before you pass the G2 test, you start over from the knowledge test and pay the package again. If your G2 is close to expiring before you pass the G test, ontario.ca notes that you can retake and pass the G2 road test to get another five years as a G2 driver rather than restarting from the G1.

Use the gap properly

Ten days is enough to fix a habit if you use it. The pattern that works:

1. One targeted lesson within a few days of the fail, working only on the categories marked on your report. Do not re-learn everything; fix the leaks.
2. Practice on the roads around your centre in between, if you have a supervising driver available.
3. A full mock test a day or two before the retake, scored the way an examiner would score it, ideally with a road test package so you test in the same car.

Does failing affect anything else?

A failed road test is not a driving offence. It does not go on your driving record, does not carry demerit points, and does not affect your insurance. The only thing that changes is the calendar, and with a targeted lesson and an early rebook the calendar moves back quickly.
