Where the centre is and how to get there
The Toronto Etobicoke DriveTest Centre is at 5555 Eglinton Avenue West, in Centennial Park Plaza near Renforth Drive, across from Centennial Park. The plaza has a large free parking lot, and the DriveTest entrance faces the lot rather than Eglinton.
The centre is just east of Highway 427 and south of Highway 401, so it is easy to reach by car from anywhere in the west end or Mississauga. TTC buses along Eglinton West and Renforth stop nearby. Be at the counter 30 minutes before your appointment.
What the test covers at Etobicoke
The G2 road test at Toronto Etobicoke is a city driving test of roughly 20 minutes. You will be scored on starting, stopping and turning; intersections of several types including left turns across traffic; at least one lane change with a visible shoulder check; parallel parking and a three-point turn; speed control through 40, 50 and 60 km/h zones; and general observation throughout. There is no highway portion on the G2.
The full G road test repeats the city elements and adds a highway section on Highway 427 and Highway 401: merging, holding a steady speed with a two-second gap, one or more lane changes, and exiting. What the roads around Etobicoke are like
- Eglinton Avenue West is a wide, fast arterial with a 60 km/h limit in places and long gaps between lights. Left turns off Eglinton across two lanes of oncoming traffic are a staple of Etobicoke tests.
- Renforth Drive, Rathburn Road and Mill Road are the mid-speed collectors where examiners watch lane position, speed control and observation at four-way stops.
- Markland Wood and Eringate are the residential pockets south and east of the plaza. Curving crescents, parked cars on both sides and 40 km/h limits make them the natural place for parallel parking, three-point turns and school-zone speed checks.
For the G test, the centre's proximity to the 427 and 401 means a highway section is a certainty. The 427 north to the 401 interchange, with its short merges and lane drops, is the piece to rehearse.
Where people lose marks at Etobicoke
- Judging left turns on Eglinton. Oncoming traffic is fast and gaps close quickly. Hesitating through a good gap costs marks; forcing a bad one can end the test.
- Speed in residential zones. Dropping from 60 on Eglinton to 40 on a crescent in one turn catches people out. Look for the sign as you turn.
- Curb contact on parallel parking. The residential streets have high curbs. Touching is a minor fault; mounting the curb is a serious one.
- Four-way stops on Rathburn. Who arrived first, and yield to the right when in doubt. Guessing wrong is a right-of-way error.
- Highway lane discipline. On the G test, drifting into the left lane and staying there is marked. Use the right lane unless you are passing.
Test-day plan for Etobicoke
