What the G2 test covers
The G2 exit test is a city driving test, usually around twenty minutes long. Expect residential streets and busier arterial roads, several intersections of different types, at least one lane change, parallel parking, a three-point turn, and possibly a hill park or a reverse into a space. There is no 400-series highway portion; that comes on the G test. The examiner is checking whether you are a safe, independent city driver: complete stops, visible mirror and shoulder checks, correct right-of-way calls, and steady speed control.
The five habits that fail most G2 candidates
Examiners see the same faults over and over, and none of them are dramatic.
- Rolling stops. The car slows to a crawl but never fully stops. At a stop sign the wheels must stop turning, and you should feel the car settle back before you go.
- Invisible observation. You may be checking your mirrors and blind spot, but if the examiner cannot see your head move, it did not happen. Make every check obvious.
- Hesitation. Waiting through a safe gap at a stop sign or a left turn is marked as a fault, and repeated hesitation can fail you on its own. Decide early and commit.
- Speed drift. Creeping over the limit on a wide arterial, or crawling ten under because you are nervous, are both marked. Know the limit and sit on it.
- Lane discipline. Wandering in the lane, cutting corners on left turns, and finishing a turn in the wrong lane all cost marks.
Every one of these is a habit, and habits are fixed by repetition with someone correcting you in the moment, which is what a prep lesson is for.
A prep plan that fits in two to five lessons
Start with an assessment drive so you know exactly where you stand rather than guessing. The instructor runs you through a mock test and gives you a short list of what to fix. Lessons two and three attack that list on the real routes around your test centre, with parking drills at the end of each session. If you have more time, a final lesson a day or two before the test is a full mock run followed by a quiet debrief. Most students who arrive with some road time need two or three of these; complete beginners need more lessons first, and this plan comes at the end.
Know your test centre
Each DriveTest centre has its own character, and instructors who work near one know its routes. In Toronto there is no downtown centre: learners book at Downsview, Etobicoke, Metro East or Port Union, and each sits in a different kind of road network. Brampton on First Gulf Boulevard has its own well-known fail points, covered in our Brampton G2 guide. Mississauga on Longside Drive is another high-volume centre. Book your test first, then choose an instructor who lists that area on their profile.
Test day checklist
- Your valid Ontario G1 licence and your booking confirmation.
- A roadworthy car with valid insurance, working lights, signals, horn and parking brake, or a road test package so your instructor handles the vehicle.
- Glasses or contacts if you need them to drive.
- Arrive early. Being late usually means losing the appointment and the fee.
- Eat something. A twenty-minute test feels long on an empty stomach.

G2 Prep Questions
How many prep lessons do I need before my G2 test?
If you already have road time with a parent or on your own, two to five focused lessons is typical. If you are a complete beginner, you need regular lessons first and the prep plan comes at the end. Your instructor will tell you honestly after the assessment drive.
Is there highway driving on the G2 test?
No. The G2 test is a city test. Highway driving is assessed on the full G test a year later, though a G1 holder can still practise highways with a licensed instructor in the car.
Can I take the G2 test in my instructor's car?
Yes, and most students do. Book a road test package and you get a warm-up drive, a ride to the centre, and the car for the test.
How long is the G2 road test?
Usually around twenty minutes of driving, plus the vehicle inspection and paperwork beforehand.
What is the most common reason people fail the G2?
Observation and complete stops. Either the examiner could not see the driver checking mirrors and blind spots, or the car never came to a full stop at a stop sign. Both are pure habit.
How soon can I retake the G2 if I fail?
There is a short waiting period before you can rebook through DriveTest, and you pay the test fee again. Take a lesson in between that targets exactly what was marked.
When can I book my G2 test?
Twelve months after getting your G1, or eight months if you complete an approved Beginner Driver Education course. Book through drivetest.ca as soon as you are eligible, because slots at busy centres go quickly.
