Why winter deserves its own lessons
Stopping distances on snow and ice are several times longer than on dry pavement, steering inputs that are harmless in summer start a skid, and visibility can vanish in seconds. None of that is intuitive, and the first time it happens should not be the first time you have thought about it. A winter lesson puts you through the situations deliberately, with a dual brake beside you, so the responses are rehearsed rather than improvised.
What a winter lesson covers
- Preparing the car: clearing all snow and ice from every window, light and the roof; checking tires, washer fluid and wipers; keeping the tank above half.
- Following distance and braking: doubling the two-second gap or more, braking early and gently, and feeling how anti-lock brakes pulse under a hard stop.
- Skid recovery: easing off the accelerator, looking and steering where you want to go, and never braking hard mid-skid. Practised at low speed in a safe space where possible.
- Black ice: where it forms (bridges, overpasses, shaded curves, intersections polished by stopping cars) and how to cross it without inputs.
- Visibility: low beams in snow, what to do in a whiteout, and how to handle spray from trucks.
- Hills, ruts and snowbanks: gentle throttle, staying in the tracks, and turning at ploughed intersections with limited sightlines.
- Highway in winter: slower merges, longer gaps, staying out of the slush between lanes, and giving snowplows room; their wings can extend three metres.
Winter tires and the insurance discount
Ontario does not require winter tires by law, unlike Quebec, but every auto insurer in Ontario has been required since 2016 to offer a discount for them, typically a few percent off your premium. More to the point, winter tires shorten stopping distances on cold pavement and snow dramatically. If you are a new driver on a family car, they are the single most useful winter purchase, and your instructor can show you the difference in braking feel.
When to book
October, before the first snow, for the preparation and technique, then one lesson after the first real snowfall to practise on actual snow. If your G2 or G test falls in winter, add a session on the roads around your centre in winter conditions; examiners expect you to adjust speed and following distance to conditions, and driving summer speeds on a snowy route is marked. A winter road test
Tests run in winter unless DriveTest closes a centre for weather. Expect the examiner to watch how you clear the car, how early you brake, and whether you slow for conditions without being told. The road test checklist applies as usual, with a snow brush added, and a road test package means the car is cleared, warmed and inspection-ready when you get in.
