Where the centre is and how to get there
The Oshawa DriveTest Centre is at 200 John Street West, in the Midtown Mall in downtown Oshawa, a block from Simcoe Street South. The mall lot has free parking, and the DriveTest entrance is on the John Street side. From Highway 401, exit at Simcoe Street and head north into downtown.
The Oshawa bus terminal and several Durham Region Transit routes are within a few minutes' walk. Be at the counter 30 minutes before your appointment.
What the test covers at Oshawa
The G2 road test at Oshawa is a city driving test of roughly 20 minutes. You will be scored on starting, stopping and turning; intersections of several types including left turns across traffic; at least one lane change with a visible shoulder check; parallel parking and a three-point turn; speed control through 40, 50 and 60 km/h zones; and general observation throughout. There is no highway portion on the G2.
The full G road test repeats the city elements and adds a highway section on Highway 401: merging, holding a steady speed with a two-second gap, one or more lane changes, and exiting. What the roads around Oshawa DriveTest are like
- Downtown one-way streets. King Street and Bond Street form a one-way pair through the core, and several side streets are one-way too. Turning from a one-way onto a two-way road, and choosing the correct lane on a one-way, are tested here in a way they are not at suburban centres. Remember that a left turn on red from a one-way onto a one-way is legal after a full stop.
- Simcoe Street is the main north-south artery, with bus stops, on-street parking and pedestrians. Observation and following distance are the focus.
- Park Road, Gibb Street and Olive Avenue link the residential grids south and west of downtown, where narrow streets with parked cars on both sides are the setting for parallel parking and three-point turns.
- Pedestrians and crosswalks are everywhere downtown. Yielding correctly at pedestrian crossovers and never passing within 30 metres of one is a scored item.
For the G test, Highway 401 is the highway section, reached via Simcoe Street South or Park Road South. Truck traffic between the Oshawa and Whitby interchanges makes the merge the part to rehearse.
Where people lose marks at Oshawa
- Wrong lane on a one-way. Turning left from a one-way street means turning from the far-left lane. Setting up in the wrong lane is a lane-use error before you have even turned.
- Pedestrian crossovers. Wait until pedestrians are fully on the sidewalk before proceeding. Rolling as soon as they clear your lane is a fault.
- Parked cars on narrow streets. Leave a door's width when passing parked cars, and slow down where you cannot see around them.
- On-street parking manoeuvres. Parallel parking between two real cars is harder than between cones. Practise it on actual downtown streets.
- 401 merge on the G test. Heavy truck traffic means you need the full ramp to build speed and a big gap before you move over.
Test-day plan for Oshawa
