Where the centre is and how to get there
The Newmarket DriveTest Centre is at 320 Harry Walker Parkway South, in the business park east of Leslie Street and south of Davis Drive. From Highway 404, exit at Davis Drive, head west, then turn south onto Harry Walker Parkway. Parking is free at the building.
York Region Transit and Viva buses on Davis Drive stop within walking distance, and Newmarket GO station is a short ride west. Be at the counter 30 minutes before your appointment.
What the test covers at Newmarket
The G2 road test at Newmarket is a city driving test of roughly 20 minutes. You will be scored on starting, stopping and turning; intersections of several types including left turns across traffic; at least one lane change with a visible shoulder check; parallel parking and a three-point turn; speed control through 40, 50 and 60 km/h zones; and general observation throughout. There is no highway portion on the G2.
The full G road test repeats the city elements and adds a highway section on Highway 404 via Davis Drive: merging, holding a steady speed with a two-second gap, one or more lane changes, and exiting. What the roads around Newmarket DriveTest are like
- Harry Walker Parkway and the business-park streets are wide, quiet and lightly signed, with trucks at loading docks. Tests start and end here, and examiners watch lane position and full stops at the park's stop signs.
- Davis Drive is the fast east-west artery with dedicated bus lanes on parts of it. Lane changes, bus-lane awareness and left turns at busy signals are routine.
- Leslie Street and Bayview Avenue carry moderate traffic with 60 km/h limits outside the core and frequent signals.
- Residential streets between Leslie and Bayview, and the older grid near downtown Newmarket, are the parking-manoeuvre section: parallel parking, three-point turns and 40 km/h school zones.
For the G test, Highway 404 is right there via Davis Drive. Merging south into commuter traffic and exiting at Mulock Drive or Green Lane is the typical loop.
Where people lose marks at Newmarket
- Bus lanes on Davis Drive. Turning right across a bus-only lane needs a check for buses and a late, deliberate lane change where permitted.
- Business-park stop signs. Empty roads invite rolling stops. Stop fully at every one.
- Speed on Leslie and Bayview. Limits change between 50 and 60 along both roads. Read every sign.
- Hesitation at rural-feeling intersections. North of Davis, sightlines are long and gaps are generous. Waiting for a perfect gap is scored as hesitation.
- 404 merge on the G test. Commuter traffic is fast and dense in the mornings. Build speed on the ramp, shoulder check, and merge into a real gap.
Test-day plan for Newmarket
- Documents: your physical licence card (G1 for a G2 test, G2 for a G test), booking confirmation, glasses if required, and the car's ownership and insurance. The full list is in our road test checklist.
