Can a Pakistani licence be exchanged in Ontario?
No. Ontario exchanges licences only with reciprocal jurisdictions (other Canadian provinces, US states and a short list of countries), and Pakistan is not on it. What your licence does earn, since the July 1, 2026 rule change, is credit for up to one year of driving experience. That credit satisfies the G1 waiting period, so with 12 months or more of verified experience you can take the G2 road test as soon as you pass the knowledge test.
What it does not do is let you skip either road test. You pass the G2 test, hold the G2 for 12 months, then pass the G test. That is the path for every non-reciprocal country now.
Documents to gather before you go to DriveTest
- Your original Pakistani licence, valid, with a visible expiry date.
- An authentication letter from the provincial licensing authority that issued it, or from the consulate where it offers this service, confirming the licence is genuine and stating the class and issue date, written in English or French. This is the slow step; request it before you leave if you can.
- A certified translation if any required field is not in English or French, dated within six months of applying. Pakistani licence cards are commonly bilingual; if any required field is only in Urdu, you need a certified translation dated within six months.
- Identity documents showing your legal name and date of birth, such as your passport and immigration document.
The process, step by step

- Book the G2 road test on drivetest.ca. With a full year of credit there is no waiting period. Busy GTA centres book weeks out, so do this early.
- Pass the G2, then hold it for 12 months.
- G road test ($91.25), which adds a highway section. Pass, and you hold a full G licence.
Remember the 60-day rule: once you live in Ontario you may drive on your home licence for 60 days, then you need an Ontario licence.
