Where the centre is and how to get there

The Toronto Metro East DriveTest Centre is at 1448 Lawrence Avenue East, Unit 15, in Victoria Terrace Plaza just west of Victoria Park Avenue. It is on the North York side of the Scarborough border, which is why so many Scarborough learners end up here. The plaza lot is free, and the DriveTest unit is toward the middle of the plaza.

Lawrence East buses stop outside, and the DVP and 401 are both a few minutes away by car. Aim to be inside 30 minutes before your appointment; the centre is busy and the check-in line can be long.

What the test covers at Metro East

The G2 road test at Toronto Metro East is a city driving test of roughly 20 minutes. You will be scored on starting, stopping and turning; intersections of several types including left turns across traffic; at least one lane change with a visible shoulder check; parallel parking and a three-point turn; speed control through 40, 50 and 60 km/h zones; and general observation throughout. There is no highway portion on the G2.

The full G road test repeats the city elements and adds a highway section on the Don Valley Parkway and Highway 401: merging, holding a steady speed with a two-second gap, one or more lane changes, and exiting. What the roads around Metro East are like

• Lawrence Avenue East is a busy six-lane arterial with frequent bus stops and plaza entrances. Expect lane changes here, and be ready for cars pulling out of driveways without warning.
• Victoria Park, Pharmacy and Warden avenues are the north-south roads examiners use to link neighbourhoods. Left turns across them at signalled intersections are routine on Metro East tests.
• Wexford and Victoria Village are the residential grids on either side of Victoria Park. Straight streets, plenty of parked cars and school zones make them the parking-manoeuvre and speed-control part of the test.
• Sloane Avenue and O'Connor Drive add a few curves and hidden intersections west of the centre.

For the G test, the Don Valley Parkway via Lawrence, or Highway 401 via Victoria Park, provides the highway section. The DVP's short ramps and heavy traffic make it the harder of the two to merge onto.

Where people lose marks at Metro East

• Plaza entrances on Lawrence. Cars nosing out of plaza driveways are a hazard the examiner expects you to see. Cover the brake and keep scanning.
• Bus stops and lane changes. A bus pulling out ahead of you needs a decision: slow and follow, or check and change lanes. Freezing is scored as hesitation.
• Residential speed. Wexford streets are 40 km/h with school zones. Creeping to 50 because the street is straight and empty is a common speed fault.
• Stopping position. At stop signs with no painted line, stop at the crosswalk, or at the edge of the sidewalk if there is no crosswalk. Stopping too far back and then creeping forward without a second stop is marked.
• DVP merge on the G test. Short ramps mean you must build speed early. Hesitating at the bottom of the ramp is the classic Metro East G fail.

Test-day plan for Metro East

1. Documents: your physical licence card (G1 for a G2 test, G2 for a G test), booking confirmation, glasses if required, and the car's ownership and insurance. The full list is in our road test checklist.
2. Warm-up drive: 30 to 60 minutes on the roads described above, right before your slot.
3. Arrive 30 minutes early at 1448 Lawrence Avenue East, Unit 15, Toronto, M4A 2V6, in Victoria Terrace Plaza near Victoria Park Avenue.
4. During the test: narrate it in your head. Mirror, signal, shoulder, go. Full stops, steady speed, and commit to safe gaps.
5. If it does not go your way: get the examiner's report, book the first available retake, and take one lesson aimed at what was marked. What happens if you fail covers the wait, fees and rebooking.
