Why most students take the test in the instructor's car
DriveTest does not supply a vehicle. You bring one, and the examiner inspects it before the test starts. Lights, signals, brake lights, horn and the parking brake all have to work, the car has to carry valid insurance and plates, and the examiner can refuse to run the test if anything fails. Using a family car means gambling on all of that plus a passenger-side brake the examiner does not have.
An instructor's car removes every one of those variables. It is a vehicle that passes inspection week after week, it is insured for instruction and road tests, and it has a dual brake fitted. Just as importantly, if you have taken even a lesson or two in it, you already know how it stops, how big it feels in a parking space, and where its blind spots are. Nervous drivers in an unfamiliar car make unfamiliar mistakes.
Can you rent a car for a road test in Ontario?
Usually not in any practical way. Most rental companies will not rent to a G1 holder at all, and G2 drivers typically run into minimum age and licence-length rules, plus a young-driver surcharge. Even where a rental is possible, you would be taking the test in a car you first sat in that morning. The instructor car route is the standard one, and it is cheaper than it sounds once you factor in the warm-up lesson that comes with it.
What the package actually looks like on the day
Your instructor picks you up an hour or so before the appointment. The warm-up drive covers the roads around the centre, which is where the examiner will take you, and works through the manoeuvres you are most worried about. You arrive at DriveTest a few minutes early, the examiner inspects the car and checks your licence and booking, and you take the test. Afterwards your instructor drives you home, whichever way it went.
Instructors cannot ride along during the test itself. It is you and the examiner in the car, which is another reason the warm-up matters: it is your last chance to hear a correction before it counts.
Which DriveTest centres are covered
Any centre your instructor serves. In Toronto that means the four centres that ring the city: Downsview, Etobicoke, Metro East and Port Union. In Peel it is the Brampton centre on First Gulf Boulevard and the Mississauga centre on Longside Drive. Instructors list the areas they cover on their profile, so check that your centre falls inside it before you book, or ask in the chat once the booking is confirmed.

Road tests are booked through DriveTest at drivetest.ca, and slots at busy GTA centres are often claimed weeks ahead. Book the test first, then book the package for that date and time. Road Test Car Questions
How much does a road test package cost?
Each instructor sets their own price, and it is shown on their profile before you book. It costs more than a standard hour because it includes the warm-up drive, the travel to and from the centre, and the use of the car for the test itself.
Do I need to have taken lessons with the instructor first?
It is not required, but at least one lesson in the same car beforehand is strongly recommended. Testing in a vehicle you have never driven adds risk you do not need on the day.
Can my instructor sit in during the test?
No. Ontario road tests are just you and the examiner. Your instructor waits at the centre and drives you home afterwards.
Is the package available for both the G2 and the G test?
Yes. The G test includes highway driving, so the warm-up for a G test usually includes a run on the nearest 400-series highway.
What if the examiner fails the car inspection?
That is exactly what the package prevents. Instructor cars are maintained and inspected constantly because they are used for tests every week. If you bring your own car and it fails inspection, you lose the appointment and the fee.
What happens if I fail the test?
You rebook through DriveTest after the short waiting period and pay the test fee again. Book a lesson in between that targets what the examiner marked, then book another package for the new date.
How far ahead should I book the package?
As soon as you have your test date. Popular instructors fill their calendars, and test slots at busy centres are booked weeks out, so the earlier the better.
