Where the centre is and how to get there

The Toronto Port Union DriveTest Centre is at 91 Rylander Boulevard, Unit 109A, in the Village of Abbey Lane Shopping Centre near Kingston Road and Port Union Road. It is one exit off Highway 401 at Port Union Road, which makes it convenient for east Scarborough, Pickering and Ajax learners. Parking in the plaza is free.

TTC buses on Kingston Road and Port Union Road stop close by, and Rouge Hill GO station is a short bus ride south. Be at the counter 30 minutes before your appointment.

What the test covers at Port Union

The G2 road test at Toronto Port Union is a city driving test of roughly 20 minutes. You will be scored on starting, stopping and turning; intersections of several types including left turns across traffic; at least one lane change with a visible shoulder check; parallel parking and a three-point turn; speed control through 40, 50 and 60 km/h zones; and general observation throughout. There is no highway portion on the G2.

The full G road test repeats the city elements and adds a highway section on Highway 401 via Port Union Road: merging, holding a steady speed with a two-second gap, one or more lane changes, and exiting. What the roads around Port Union are like

• Kingston Road is the main artery: wide, fast, with a 60 km/h limit on stretches and plenty of plaza entrances. Lane changes and left turns across Kingston Road are the core of a Port Union test.
• Port Union Road, Lawrence Avenue East and Meadowvale Road link the neighbourhoods and carry moderate traffic with frequent signalled intersections.
• West Rouge and Centennial are the residential areas south of Kingston Road and around Rylander. Curving streets, cul-de-sacs and parked cars make them the parking-manoeuvre section. Expect a three-point turn on a dead-end street and parallel parking behind a parked car.
• School zones are common here, and examiners use them to check whether you read signs as you turn.

For the G test, Highway 401 is right there via Port Union Road. The eastbound and westbound ramps are both short, so building speed before the merge matters.

Where people lose marks at Port Union

• Kingston Road left turns. Fast oncoming traffic and long light cycles. Commit to a safe gap; do not wait for a perfect one.
• Cul-de-sac three-point turns. Check both ways before every leg of the turn and do not drag the turn out to four or five points.
• Speed in school zones. Turning from 60 on Kingston Road into a 40 km/h school zone in one move is where speed faults happen.
• Plaza exits. Leaving the Abbey Lane lot is part of the test. Signal, stop fully at the exit, and look both ways before entering Rylander or Kingston Road.
• 401 merge on the G test. Short ramps, heavy truck traffic. Match the flow before you move over and keep a full two-second gap once you are in.

Test-day plan for Port Union

1. Documents: your physical licence card (G1 for a G2 test, G2 for a G test), booking confirmation, glasses if required, and the car's ownership and insurance. The full list is in our road test checklist.
2. Warm-up drive: 30 to 60 minutes on the roads described above, right before your slot.
3. Arrive 30 minutes early at 91 Rylander Boulevard, Unit 109A, Toronto (Scarborough), M1B 5M5, in the Village of Abbey Lane Shopping Centre.
4. During the test: narrate it in your head. Mirror, signal, shoulder, go. Full stops, steady speed, and commit to safe gaps.
5. If it does not go your way: get the examiner's report, book the first available retake, and take one lesson aimed at what was marked. What happens if you fail covers the wait, fees and rebooking.
