What changed on July 1, 2026
Ontario has always split foreign licences into two groups. Drivers from reciprocal jurisdictions (other Canadian provinces, US states, and Australia, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, the Isle of Man, Japan, South Korea, Kosovo, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Switzerland, Taiwan and Ukraine) can exchange their licence for an Ontario one with no road test. Everyone else is non-reciprocal.
For non-reciprocal drivers, ontario.ca now states: "Effective July 1, 2026, you can obtain credit for up to one year of driving experience, by showing a valid, original foreign driver's licence and authentication document." Two things follow from that:
- The credit is capped at 12 months, however long you have driven at home.
- Both road tests are required. You pass the G2 road test, then wait a minimum of 12 months, then take the G road test. Foreign experience cannot shorten the wait between the two.
Before the change, drivers who could document longer experience were often able to skip ahead to the G road test. That route is closed.
What the path looks like now
- Vision test and knowledge test at a DriveTest centre, with your original licence, an authentication letter and ID. The G1 package is $159.75.
- Experience credit. With 12 months or more of verified experience you get the full one-year credit, which satisfies the G1 waiting period. You can book the G2 road test right away.
- G2 road test: a city test of about 20 minutes. Pass, and you hold a G2 with its restrictions (zero blood alcohol, and passenger limits for young drivers at night).
- Wait 12 months on the G2. No credit applies here.
- G road test ($91.25), which adds highway driving. Pass, and you have a full licence.

The documents that matter
- Your original licence, valid, with a visible expiry date. Expired licences do not earn credit.
- An authentication letter: an official letter from the government agency that issued the licence, confirming it is genuine and stating the issue date and class, written in English or French. Some consulates provide this; otherwise it comes from the licensing authority at home. Start this early, it is the slow step.
- A certified translation, dated within six months of your application, if the licence is not in English or French. Embassies, consulates, ATIO-certified translators and certain other credentialled translators are accepted.
- Identity documents showing your legal name and date of birth.

What experienced drivers should do differently
The rule change means an experienced driver now faces a G2 road test that examines city habits, then a G test a year later. Skill is rarely the problem. Habits are: rolling stops, mirror-only lane changes, different right-of-way conventions, and, for drivers from left-hand-traffic countries, positioning on the right. Examiners mark those hard.
The efficient plan is an assessment drive with a licensed instructor who knows your DriveTest centre, then three to eight lessons aimed only at what the assessment surfaced, then the G2 test with a road test package. Our newcomer lessons guide covers the habits in detail.
Timing: the 60-day rule
Once you are living in Ontario, you may drive on your home licence for 60 days. After that you need an Ontario licence, so the knowledge test and authentication letter should be underway in your first weeks, not your last.
