Why a rental car rarely works for a road test
- G1 holders usually cannot rent at all. Rental companies require a full or at least G2 licence, and a G1 driver could not drive the car to the centre alone anyway.
- G2 drivers face age and surcharge rules. Most companies require renters to be 21 or older, some 25, and charge a daily young-driver fee on top of the rate. Some exclude G2 holders outright.
- Insurance questions. The rental's insurance may not cover a road test, and the examiner needs proof of insurance and the vehicle permit in the car.
- An unfamiliar car on test day. You would be parallel parking a car you first sat in that morning. Nervous drivers in an unfamiliar car make unfamiliar mistakes.
Put together, a rental for a G2 test means a daily rate, a young-driver surcharge, insurance you have to verify, and a second licensed driver to get it there. Most learners never get past the first obstacle.
What an instructor road test package costs

Borrowing a family car instead
Borrowing is free but not risk-free. The car must pass inspection (all lights and signals, horn, parking brake, tires, no cracked windshield, no dash warnings), you need the permit and proof of insurance in the car, and a G1 candidate still needs a fully licensed driver to bring it. Which option makes sense
- G2 test, G1 holder: instructor package, or a well-checked family car with a licensed driver to bring you. Rental is not realistic.
- G test, G2 holder under 25: instructor package, unless you own or regularly drive a car that will pass inspection.
- G test, G2 holder 25 or older with a clean rental history: a rental is possible, but you still need a highway warm-up in an unfamiliar car. Most still choose the package.
