Why highway driving is where G tests are lost
By the time you take the G test you have been driving solo for a year on your G2, and most people have been on the highway plenty of times. The problem is that the highway habits you pick up on your own are rarely the ones the examiner wants. Merging cautiously at 70 km/h feels safe and is marked as a fault. Following at one car length feels normal in GTA traffic and is marked as a fault. Changing lanes with a glance instead of a shoulder check is what everyone around you does, and it is marked as a fault.
Examiners are not grading your bravery. They want an early decision, a shoulder check that actually happens, and a merge that matches the speed of traffic. Merging too slowly and then over-correcting is the single most common way candidates lose marks on the G, and it is the easiest thing to fix with a few deliberate hours on the road.
The rule for G1 drivers
On a G1 you are not allowed on 400-series highways or high-speed expressways at all, with one exception: a licensed driving instructor in the car. A parent with a full G does not count. That means highway lessons with an instructor are the only legal way to build highway experience before your G2, and they pay off twice: once when you are driving solo on your G2, and again when the G test comes around.
The GTA gives you three very different highways
Not all highways are the same, and the one nearest you shapes what you should practise.
- Highway 401 through Toronto and Mississauga runs a collector-express system where choosing the wrong side early can leave you stuck in the wrong lane for several exits. Volume is relentless and the merges are short.
- The Don Valley Parkway is short, fast and constantly curved, with on-ramps that arrive with almost no runway. Gap selection has to be quick.
- The Gardiner Expressway adds tight left-side exits and lane drops that punish a late decision, plus the transition to and from the QEW.
- The QEW from Etobicoke through Mississauga, Oakville and Burlington to Hamilton is wide and fast, with long merges and heavy truck traffic.
- Highways 403, 410 and 407 serve Mississauga and Brampton, and the 407 in particular is where instructors take nervous students first because traffic is lighter.
An instructor who teaches in your city knows which of these your examiner is likely to use and will put your practice hours there.
How many highway lessons you need
For a G2 driver preparing for the G, two or three highway-focused lessons is usually enough to replace the shortcuts with the habits the examiner wants. For a G1 driver who has never been on a highway, plan on a first lesson on a quiet stretch to get used to the speed, then two or three more on the busier road nearest your test centre. Nervous drivers should tell the instructor up front; a good one starts on the 407 or a quiet section of the 403 rather than the 401 at rush hour.
Highway lessons by city
Instructors on MrDriver list the areas they cover, and many note the highways they use. In Toronto expect the 401, DVP and Gardiner. In Mississauga it is the 401, 403, 410 and QEW. Highway Lesson Questions
Can I drive on the highway with a G1?
Only with a licensed driving instructor in the car. A parent or friend with a full G licence does not count. On your own or with a supervising driver, 400-series highways and high-speed expressways are off limits on a G1.
Is highway driving on the G2 test?
No. The G2 test is a city test. Highway driving is assessed on the full G test, but building the skill early makes you a safer G2 driver and a stronger G candidate.
How fast should I be going when I merge?
Match the speed of the traffic you are joining, which usually means using the whole ramp to accelerate. Merging well below traffic speed is one of the most common faults on the G test.
I am nervous about the highway. Where do instructors start?
Somewhere quiet. In the GTA that often means the 407 or a lighter stretch of the 403 at an off-peak time, then working up to the 401 once the speed feels normal.
How many highway lessons do I need before the G test?
Two or three focused lessons is typical for a G2 driver with a year of road time. Complete highway beginners on a G1 should plan for a gentle first lesson plus two or three more.
Do highway lessons cost more than regular lessons?
Not usually. Instructors set an hourly rate that applies to whatever you work on, and it is shown on their profile before you book. Longer lessons of ninety minutes or two hours are common for highway work because of the driving time to get there.
